Episodes 13-27 Streaming
Air Master is a fighting show. Pure, with no dramatic baggage or unnecessary complexities to get in the way of its elbow-to-the-head thrills. The closest it gets to studied intent is to give the fights room to build up and expand out before exploding into acrobatic, face-smashing violence. Somewhere in the maze of comically crisscrossing characters, the fighters and their friends pick up enough personality to be fun and likeable, but only inasmuch as it's necessary to make the fights matter and the downtime enjoyable. Any structure the second half has comes from the Fukamichi Ranking (the first half was all independent fights separated by bizarre filler episodes), which does little more than provide a loose framework for chaining together as many all-out street-fights as possible.

Four volumes in and at last Teru knows that DAISY is Kurosaki. Finally the thing that we credited her for suspecting from day one has been confirmed. Everything's far from being out in the open though as Kurosaki doesn't know that his secret is out. Or at least Teru and (and we readers) don't know if he knows. Either way they're still pretending they don't know about the identity of Teru's secret protector and hacker extraordinaire, DAISY. Both are trying to act natural and pretend nothing has changed. Unfortunately this means that despite the big reveal, we're still stuck in the same frustrating cycle as the duo do the same dance over and over.

Dengeki Daisy has already fallen into a state of monotony only four volumes in. It often feels downright repetitive. Its one saving grace is that the characters are still as entertaining as ever. Teru turns her fretting into weird poses and teasing while Kurosaki prods back in mostly friendly frustration. Their banter is fun in how abrupt its executed. Amusing as they may be however, Teru and Kurosaki are still facing the same problems they were one, two and three volumes ago. It's not until mid-way through that we really get the feeling something is happening to advance the plot forward in this fourth book. The first half is taken up with battling bullies and the flu as Teru plans to attend her first mixer to get her mind off of Kurosaki. These stories have their charm but don't feel worth the postponed plot.

While fan service and fantasy action are still the core emphases of the series, the final volume reaffirms that there is at least a bit of a story worth caring about here, too. Some lax fight choreography and story execution at the end prevents the series from hitting its full potential, but this content still has enough going for it to succeed even without the nudity. This last volume also affirms that the entire first season is just a set-up for the serious Queen's Blade action, which will be portrayed in the second season scheduled to start American release in late spring.

Media Blasters delivers the DVD versions of the opener and closer intact on each episode, with the English translations and (incomplete) English credits only following at the end of the volume. Included in the Extras are clean renditions of both the tame on-air version and nudity-laced DVD version of the closer, as well as episodes 5 and 6 of the Gynos Academy omake episodes; this time around they feature Cattleya's seemingly sexual late-night kitchen adventure and the “election” to replace all-powerful Student Council President Aldra, respectively. Also present is a public recording of “Radio Queen's Blade” recorded at the 2009 Tokyo Anime Fair (i.e. only a few days before the first episode was broadcasted) which features the seiyuu for Leina and Tomoe and lasts about 24 minutes. Boxed set DVD and Blu-Ray versions of the entire series are also supposed to be available.

As good as the series otherwise looks, the fight choreography in the big fight in episode 12 is a weak point. Director Kinji Yoshimoto, who has very limited experience with action-heavy titles beyond this franchise, seems uncertain exactly how he wants to set up and execute a complicated battle involving nearly the entire cast, resulting in an awkward-looking affair which allows all of the fighters to show off their moves but not in a smoothly-flowing manner. The excellent musical score, which continues to be the series' greatest strength, does what it can but still has to have material worthy of being backed by its gracefully-soaring numbers.

The dub, unfortunately, reverts to being fully hit-or-miss. Eva Christensen (the rarely-used voice of Giant Robo's Gin Rei) is a good fit and performance for Cattleya, as is the uncredited casting for Melpha, but the uncredited choices for Ymir and especially Queen Aldra are much more questionable; the latter, in fact, fails to generate any sense of royal authority. Amongst recurring roles, Trina Hilbe's sultry-voiced take on Echidna continues to be the stand-out performance. The dub script remains tight throughout.

Leina is the principle protagonist of the series, though, and she does get the lion's share of attention in this volume even though episode 9 mostly focuses on Cattleya and Ymir. Though she still has some difficult fights, Leina gets abused much less here and, by the end of this volume, is actually capable of defending herself and even developing her own signature move. The credibility of her progression is hampered some by the hyper-concentrated training regimen gimmick the series pulls, but at least Leina is, thankfully, no longer pathetic by the end.

The fan service and humor continue to be all one could reasonably ask for, too. Ditzy Nanael provides the volume its requisite quota of panty shots, while her efforts to find replacement divine milk, including her encounters with assorted varieties of fruit-flavored goat milk, and slovenly sleeping posture provide solid running jokes. Other characters get regular opportunities to flash their breasts and the continuing high caliber of the artistry assures that such service gets rendered in loving detail. All of the new female characters get cosplay-worthy costumes, too.

Though one could cynically (and not necessarily inaccurately) view Queen's Blade as a whole as merely a fan service-intensive romp involving sexy women fighting fantasy battles against one another, its first season has, in general, served two specific purposes: assembling a broad and varied cast of female fighters and showing the progression of Leina from being a wimp unable to protect herself to a toughened-up combatant who can actually hold her own in a Queen's Blade-caliber fight. Despite some cheesy design and execution to some of the action scenes, the final four episodes accomplish all of the above purposes satisfyingly well.

Although a couple more new combatants will show up in the second season, most of the rest of the key characters debut here. The practical blacksmith Cattleya is possibly the most notorious of the QB fighters because of her ponderously huge breasts and a sword that could match that of Berserk's Guts, although she also gets to be the character wearing glasses and the mother. Ymir, who looks nothing like a traditional fantasy dwarf beyond her height, fills out the position of the series' requisite ultra-petite character and has some neat gauntlets to boot. Über-chested Melpha, who appears only in the last episode, is the priestess who uses some rather unconventional “Holy Poses” to activate her powers, while the petite Queen Aldra, with a mask that covers one eye, also makes a formal appearance at that point. All of the other fighters who have appeared previously also make appearances to one degree or another and the angel Nanael is still around making a nuisance of herself, too.

Her heirloom sword damaged, Leina seeks out the renowned blacksmith Cattleya, a former dragonslayer who has retired to a domestic and business role. Ymir, a dwarven princess from Steel Mountain, also seeks out Cattaleya, but for different reasons: she's irked that Steel Mountain is losing business for their top-quality weapons to Cattaleya's cheaper productions. Battles, of course, ensue. In the wake of that incident Leina finally runs across Risty, who is now traveling with Tomoe and Shizuka, but gets a rude shock when Risty rejects her for her continuing weakness. Leina makes an arrangement with Echidna to get special intensive training to help her overcome her biggest flaws, which gives both her older sister Claudette and her younger sister Elina a chance to catch up with her; before either can move on, a reckoning between Leina and Claudette over their relationship and respective roles must be had. Afterwards, most of the prospective Queen's Blade participants approach the capital city of Gynos, but so, too, do the minions of the Swamp Witch, who are intent on slaughtering the prospective contestants before they can even participate. Before the gates of Gynos a climactic battle rages, one in which Leina must prove her mettle in the face of daunting odds and Queen Aldra herself might get involved.

Evaluated independently, the novel spins a briskly and smoothly-paced tale about a young man who gets drawn into the schemes of a pretty but exceedingly eccentric girl and all of the weird things which happen to him because of that association. The novel doubtlessly achieved its vast popularity partly because it gleefully exploits many common anime and manga clichés, always with a sideways wink to the reader to indicate a certain self-awareness about its use of said tropes. In fact, Nagaru's genius is in designing his story around the clichés, essentially making them part of the plot, rather than setting the story within them, as is normally done.

Enhancing this approach is a likable core cast. Laid-back, practical, and skeptical Kyon cuts a sharp contrast to the anime leading men normally found in this kind of role, while his co-starring female counterpart is a veritable force of nature in the form of a pretty girl. Few heroines in any medium can match her combination of bullheadedness, passionate tenacity, and unrestrainable force of will; this is the kind of character who could make things happen even if she couldn't literally make things happen, as she is hard to deny. Her highly temperamental nature often results in her being held up as a classic example of a tsundere type, though in her case there does not seem to be an underlying softness. This is a girl who has been conditioned into toughness by the extremity of her convictions, so much so that she shows only vague outward signs that she is even aware that she is attracted to Kyon (which he, of course, is completely oblivious to, although the other cast members seem to notice it). Mikuru is nearly her opposite, a mewling uber-moe girl who seems just a bit tougher than she outwardly lets on, while Yuki is the classic Rei Ayanami type, albeit one who seems more comfortable in her own skin. Koizumi gets less attention than the others save for a couple of key scenes, but he seems a likable good-natured guy. Other supporting characters are too minor to matter much.

Hundreds of anime series have been produced in the past decade but only a select few can legitimately be called sensations. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is one of them. Like it or not, respect it or not, its combination of quirkiness, clever toying with common genre conventions, and excellent production values turned it into both a smash hit in Japan and one of the most talked-about anime series since Neon Genesis Evangelion in the American fan community. While its success may not have exactly been predestined, undoubtedly being based on a novel that was itself a sensation helped its cause. Nagaru Tanigawa's original novel, which has sold 4.5 million copies in Japan since its 2003 release, is now available in the U.S. in both paperback and hardcover versions for all you Haruhi maniacs to enjoy.

Those who have seen the anime series and are looking for skipped scenes or fabulous new insight into the characters may not find much of interest here, as the first six chronological episodes of the anime were a very tight adaptation of this novel, down even to exactly replicated dialogue in many places. As in the anime, Kyon narrates in a first-person perspective, offering the same amount of insight (or lack thereof) and knowledge that the anime version shows. If there is any real difference between the book and anime content, it's that the book plays up Kyon's more prurient side just a bit more and is a little more firmly suggestive that perhaps Kyon's interest in Haruhi had as much to do with him sympathizing with her still fervently holding onto dreams that he has set aside over time as with how pretty she looks. Of course, when you have content as friendly to anime adaptation as this book is, not much adjusting needs to be done. (One might almost think that the book was written specifically with an eventual anime adaptation in mind. . .)

This is also a surprisingly bad example of lip-synching to the animation. English dubs make such a concerted effort to do this (since American audiences expect that in their animation) that special timing software was developed for that purpose and English scripts are usually adjusted to account for it, but it looks like little serious effort was made in this case. The problem is so distractingly bad in episode 2 that characters can sometimes be heard starting to talk before their lips start moving.

Based on a 20-volume manga by Kaori Yuki, the three animated episodes loosely follow the first story arc but were intended more as an introduction to the manga than a formal adaptation of it. Given that, ending on something of a cliffhanger may have been deliberate, as suggested by its final “Game Over or Continue” screenshot. It does resolve enough of its presented storyline to achieve at least some degree of closure, but really this is really just the beginning of the story, and several important points (such as how the “Evils” referred to in the animation are actually a separate race) do not get adequately explained. To get the rest you must rely on the manga, which completed its American release last year. On its own it is a sharp, great-looking series which mixes shojo elements with sometimes intensely graphic violence, but this was not a production meant to stand on its own.

Though made in 2000, the visuals look so sharp that this could easily be mistaken for a more recent production. The higher per-episode budget accorded OVA animation shows in its pretty character designs and expert artistry, and despite a few shortcuts the animation delivers, too, especially in its action scenes. The nicely complementary soundtrack appropriately sets the moods, with its cool English opening number offering a good lead-in on the first episode and a rock closer backing all three. Overall, this is a great-looking and good-sounding series.

The English dub, however, has issues. The English script stays very tight, and performances such as those of Alexiel and Kurai do hit the mark, but others sound too loud, brash, or rough, especially to those who have watched the series subtitled first. That few in the English cast have substantial dubbing credits, and no one beyond Crispin Freeman (as Rosiel) still regularly works in anime dubbing, is a good indicator of the strength of the talent involved in this project.

Of course, the supernatural reality shown in the series could also be treated as a purely fantastic construction only loosely derived from actual religion, as is the case with Ah! My Goddess. Many of the naming conventions and concepts have been borrowed from the Jewish Kabbalah tradition or apocryphal Christan texts, but most – most notably including Adam Kadmon, the so-called “primordial man” – have been given new interpretations. And, naturally, none of the content here about the extermination of demons or problems in Heaven even remotely resembles anything canonical.

Strip the supernatural components away and you have remarkably graphically violent shojo fare which features lots of bishonen characters and throws in both a transvestite demon and a cute kid demon for good measure. (And what would a shojo series be without pretty guys sprouting wings, anyway?) Most of the characters, both human and non-human, have troublesome and/or unresolved emotional and relationship issues, allowing the writing to practically bury the series in angst. It confronts the central incest issue head-on, handling it in a far less elegant and delicate manner than Koi Kaze but dealing with it and all its potential fallout nonetheless. It lacks real fan service, but guys not into shojo melodrama should still find enough action and bloody violence to keep their interest. The content maintains a fast, steady pace, although it sometimes also gives off the kind of compacted feel that greatly condensed storytelling can generate.

Originally released on DVD by Central Park Media in 2001 and re-released in 2005, this three-episode 2000 OVA by Bandai Visual and Hal Film Maker (with digital production by Satelight) was picked up by Media Blasters when its original American license expired. The offering reviewed here is MB's new 2008 release under their AnimeWorks label, which sports new cover art (the picture advertised on many Web sites is not correct) and enhanced “Blasterbit video,” which results in an impressively sharp video print. It also sports a different balance of Extras than previous releases, including an angel hierarchy, textless content, gallery of screen shots, and all-yaoi trailers, but does not offer anything new in sound production or video content, nor does it replace the original English dub. The $19.99 price makes it friendly to newcomers, but those who own previous releases should have little interest in picking up this one.

Its production history aside, Angel Sanctuary is not a title for the easily offended. It prominently features incest and debates the immorality of it, treats demons in a sympathetic matter, puts a dim and pessimistic spin on angels and the Heavenly hierarchy, regards God as less than omnipotent, and generally contains a lot of content which devout Christians and Jews could easily find sacrilegious if not heretical. That, of course, should make it appeal just fine to the rebellious streak in American teens, else one could not explain the mild success of the 1995 live-action American movie The Prophecy, which also dealt with angels twisted into nasty killers. After all, dark and/or fallen angels have long been a prominent element of fantasy and supernatural mythos across the world, and associating human foibles with beings that should be the purest of the pure has long been a moviemaking gimmick, so why not take the next step and show true angels as the bad guys?

Artistry and production values for the series are a little above average but not particularly remarkable, with good points (background art) balanced out by bad ones (the thick-lipped character design for Leo, some imperfect integration between foreground and background art, monster designs are very generic). The soundtrack is heavy on spooky themes in the way you would expect a kid's “horror” show to be; think classic Scooby-Doo. The opener is a decent enough J-pop number, but I have to wonder what the original producers were thinking with the closer; a song named “Sexy Sexy” is being used for the closer for a family TV show? How is that a good idea?

Ultimately there are only two valid reasons to watch Ghost Stories: you want to be educated about Japanese school ghosts or you want to see what kind of craziness the English dub cast can pull off. My recommendation? Skip the subtitled version and only watch the parody rewrite offered by the English dub. It's far more entertaining and actually worth your time and money, unlike the original version.

The humor in this volume is more hit-or-miss than it was in the first volume, and some of it may be too edgy or tasteless for some viewers. Some jokes and cultural references – especially in episode 5 – are also too topical for their own good; how many anime fans will get a reference to Joel Osteen, for instance, and what's with all the Christian Slater-bashing? Enough of the jokes and alternate characterizations do work (especially Monica Rial's ultra-Christian take on Momoko) for the volume to be well worth recommending, though, and it's certainly more entertaining than the very blasé unmodified script shown in the Japanese version. Both positive and negative credit goes to the principal English VAs, all of whom contribute to the English script and deliver their lines for great effect. (Much of the humor, according to some of the VAs involved, was complete ad-libbing.) That their performances don't resemble the originals at all is irrelevant in this case.

For those who don't have a clue about Japanese traditions on school-based Ghost Stories, a very informative “Ghost Files” entry is included in the Extras which explains the cultural aspects of the phenomenon and the particular commonly-known ghosts being referenced in this volume. Some of the introductory material is a straight repeat of what was offered in volume 1, and the way the information is organized could have been handled better (another submenu for the individual ghosts would have improved things), but it's still an indispensable aid for those who are intent on watching the series straight-up. Other extras include clean opener and closer, company previews, and a Next Volume preview – and, as mentioned before, don't skip this and do play it with the “hearing impaired” subtitles on or you'll miss some extra jokes.

Most non-Japanese viewers are not going to find the unaltered version to be of much interest, though. Without the the alterations you're watching a run-of-the-mill family-oriented supernatural series which is unlikely to be fully appreciated by anyone who didn't grow up in Japan, since the stories are meant to resonate with people who grew up on tales of ghosts in school bathroom stalls, human-faced dogs, or ghosts who manifest a path to the underworld in a school's sports equipment shed. American fans may appreciate the cultural insight it offers, but moreso here than with most anime titles they won't fully “get it” because they weren't raised Japanese. The English dub, on the other hand, is much more attuned to content that American fans would be more likely to appreciate. It's also slanted much more towards adult audiences than the Japanese version, with references to “tranny hookers,” Barbra Streisand, and other things that either wouldn't be appropriate for a 10-year-old viewer or would fly way over his head.

First, let's get the contentious issue out of the way: yes, as with the first volume, ADV's English dub for the second volume of Ghost Stories radically alters the characterizations of the main characters and outright changes about two-thirds of the original script in an effort to load each episode with topical jokes and off-color humor. This effectively turns the English dub into a parody of the original, with separate “hearing impaired” subtitles included that are keyed to the English dub. Playing the dub with that option on is recommended, since some of the jokes fly by too fast for the average viewer to make out and there are additional jokes specific to those subtitles. (Watch for the trademark symbols, especially in the Next Volume preview.) The Japanese language track is still unaltered and has faithful subtitles associated with it, so those who have lambasted ADV for what they've done to the dub can just ignore it and watch the show as originally written.

Previous DVD volumes of Excel Saga have been tons of fun, but the layout of this disc is confusing to say the least. It's hard to navigate the garish menus with all the options crammed into the lower right of the screen. The extras are lacking in creativity as well; there's nothing here quite like the "Find the Mint" game on Volume 3 or the random button-pressing fun of Volume 2. What is here is a look at the evolution of the opening credit sequence (evidentially it went through a few rough drafts before becoming the final bit of insanity we all know and love), and a sneak-peek at the Puni Puni Poemi OAV. Yes, Sandora's bizarre anime creation is real, and it's coming soon from ADV.

The final episode of this release alone makes the disc worth having. Excel Saga is one of those infuriating anime series in which every fourth or fifth episode is Sheer Brilliance but is surrounded by stretches of more humdrum material, forcing fans to purchase the entire series to get the good stuff. It's probably too much to hope that a "best-of" Excel Saga DVD is in the future.

Speaking of the voices, this volume marks Larissa Wolcott's debut as the English dubbed voice of Excel. Jessica Calvello, Excel's original American voice, threw herself so wholeheartedly into recreating Mitsuishi's screechy chatter that she promptly damaged her vocal chords and had to retire mid-production. Wolcott is as good a replacement as can be, but somehow manages to makes the character even more grating than she already was. There's something of Project A-Ko's C-ko in this new Excel. Still, the voice is supposed to be annoying, and Wolcott and the other new cast members are worthy additions to an already stellar ensemble.

As the series progresses the quality of the animation begins to wane. The artists rely more and more on super-deforming the characters, which may fit the tone of the show, but personally this reviewer finds the broad humor funnier when things remain in the one-step-removed reality the cast normally inhabits. The art direction is still top-notch, however, with Versatility being the name of the game. Art Director Junichi Azuma no doubt put a lot of effort into adapting the look of the show to whatever genre it happens to be skewering at any given moment. The “America” episode features a wonderful sequence in which Excel sings the praises of both Japanese and American animation, all the while morphing into the likeness of Disney, Looney Tunes, and superhero cartoon characters.

Just when it seems like the show has worn out its welcome things turn around and once again Excel Saga is making milk shoot out of your nose. When Ilpalazzo announces his plan to send Excel and Hyatt to the United States on reconnaissance you know you're in for a treat. There's nothing quite so funny as seeing our own culture through a foreign lens, and when the lens is as cracked as Excel Saga's the end result is surefire hilarity. Thus the ACROSS girls find themselves in an America where everybody is a member of a street gang, the only words spoken are expletives, and any young immigrant's dreams of a better life are ruthlessly squashed by the local mafia boss. That's right, Pedro's son Sandora has come to the US to pursue a career as an anime creator, only to be exploited by a mob boss named (what else?) Corliogne. It's very late in the show before someone points out that anime is only anime if it's made in Japan, but no one seems to care.

Much of the humor in this episode is derived from Ilpalazzo and Excel's mangled attempts at the English language. Needless to say this creates a marked difference between the original Japanese and the English dubbed versions. The characters' bad English becomes a mix of bad Spanish and bad Ebonics, which is funny in its own way, but can't really compare with experience of hearing Kotono Mitsuishi saying "Me-erry Chree-st-mas!" to a group of inner-city thugs in that distinctly high-pitched voice of hers.

Much the same can be said for the book as a whole - how often do you get the chance to read a story about a dashing butler fighting a chainsaw-wielding psychopath with a passion for pregnancy? Well if it's drawn half as well as Black Butler, then you may find yourself hoping for it more often. Yana Toboso's art is gorgeous. If lithe pretty-boys with Gothic flair rendered in crisp detail tickles your fancy even a little, then prepare to melt. Whether you're watching these characters back flip off walls, stare venomously at their adversaries or just striking a pretty pose in their classy clothing, there's no shortage of eye-candy here. It's easily arguable that the visuals are the strongest element the series has. It's hard to imagine each scene holding even a fraction of its poignancy or interest-grab if the art wasn't one attractive illustration after another.

The title “Hetalia” is a portmanteau of the words hetare and Italia. The latter's meaning is obvious, but the former means “useless coward” in Japanese. The star of our history lesson, the northern region of Italy to be specific, is portrayed as a fragile, babyish gourmet whose weapon of choice is a white flag. Germany only accepts his alliance grudgingly, and as the immature America is quick to point out, this may have a lot more to do with Italy's soft desirable “body,” (read: land, but then again…) than his usefulness in combat. Germany himself fits all the clichés associated with Deutschland: hard-nosed, humorless, and too ambitious for his own good.

The good news is that this is not a hateful smattering of international reputations but quite the opposite. For all his inadequacy, Italy is an endearing scamp, the Costello to Germany's Abbott, and throughout his “embarrassing history,” every country seems to like him for who he is. He is, in truth, a lovable useless Italy. (So…Hetaliaisubeki? No no, that's silly.) All his friends are as hopelessly charming in their faults, from Spain to Sealand, and it's really this sugar-sweet treatment that many could find offensive.

City Hunter is based on a manga by Tsukasa Hojo, and his complex, realistic art style is carried through here in all its glory. The slapstic humor never gets old, and while there's plenty of character development here, there's also enough action to keep even the most impatient fan riveted.

The dub, which is directed by Gary Dehan, is easily ADV's best effort to date. All of the characters sound perfect, and no detail is untouched. Even the script is well-done. (For those fans wondering what Ryo's favorite vague sexual euphamism "Mokkori" has been changed to, it's "Nookie".) The aging logo has been replaced with a near-identical rendered version, which is simply beautiful. Every American release should have this kind of production value!

That aside, this "motion picture" is actually one of the annual made-for-TV feature-length OAV's called "Good-Bye my Sweetheart". (An unmarketable title if there ever was one.) An actress named EMI (that's "Amy" in this version... grr...) comes to City Hunter in an effort to find her long lost brother who has mysteriously left his calling card -- black roses -- for her backstage one day. Ryo is reluctant to take her case (since she dresses like a man) but Kaori (who's a big fan) bullies him into it.

Her brother, in reality, is now a terrorist by the name of "The Professor". He feels betrayed by his country, and so he'll now blow up Tokyo's business district Shinjuku by means of a complicated network of bombs placed in strategic locations. The first bomb will be the trigger for all the others, and is under the seat Amy is sitting on as guest of honor on Shinjuku's new monorail. What follows is pure mayhem: a great mixture of "Speed" and a John Woo film.

It seems everyone is waiting to see what this dub is like, so I'll just skip a few pending review titles so I can tell you now: It's excellent. This is possibly the best dub that has ever been produced that hasn't been directed by Jack Fletcher (Urban Vision & Disney). There's only one problem: THEY CHANGED THE NAMES!!

Ryo is now known as "Joe Saeba", the famous detective with a libido only slightly bigger than the things his parter Kaori hits him with when he turns into a horny idiot. Coffee shop vigilante Umibozu is now known by his nickname "Falcon", and resident police woman friend Saeko is now Sandra. Rumor has it that this was done in an attempt to sell the long-as-hell TV series to some TV channel (cable, I'm guessing), although since some characters still have Japanese names and it takes place in Tokyo, this hardly makes sense. (I'm told the subtitled version is left intact.)

There are scarcely a handful of series out there that can tell you whether you'll love or hate them based on one episode. Hetalia doesn't even need one full episode, and that's saying something considering the episodes are only five minutes long. By the end of the introductory “world conference,” a raucous flowery nation-party gone awry composed entirely of bad stereotypes spouting bad jokes that culminate in the country of Italy shouting “PASTA!” for no good reason, around a third of the poor souls assaulted by this nonsense will be desperate to shut it off before the title has even risen from a field of sparkling rose petals. Those that survived the incomprehensible intro (choose subs, choose the dub, you still can't understand half of that terrifying two minutes,) will be treated to something that has never really been done before, but the question remains…should it have been?

As with the first season, this one has no English dub, but at least the subtitles are free of the typos which plagued the first season and do include an occasional explanatory note where certain jokes do not translate well. The first letter of longer lines will sometimes run off the screen on some TVs/monitors, however. The only real Extras are clean opener and closer, and Sentai seems to be getting a bit lazy with its trailers; all of them on this volume are just the series openers.

After Story does clean up a couple of lingering details, such as how Yoshino ended up as an electrician after formerly being a rock star and what, exactly, happened between Sunohara and the soccer club. Tomoya's relationship with his father is still a work in progress as this set ends and the “end of the world” story still apparently has more to tell, but Fuko is barely mentioned at all and remains an unresolved thread; presumably this will be dealt with in the second half? On the plus side, the series throws in a few nice jokes and references to other Key/Visual Art's titles for dedicated fans. Overall, it is a title which should thoroughly satisfy fans of the franchise and thoroughly flummox most who never appreciated the first series.

Kyoto Animation maintains the same artistic quality standards seen throughout the first series: good, but definitely not their best. The girls' summer uniforms, which lack the tan jackets, are not as sharp but not quite generic, either, and the character designs effectively de-age Misae and Yoshino during their flashback scenes. As before, the only real CG is seen in the robot in the “end of the world” sequences.

The soundtrack merely carries over most of its recurring themes from the original series, so its quality here is more symptomatic of very effectively using what it has than impressing with anything new. Lia, who did the OP and ED for Air and the last-episode ending theme for the original series, does both of them here, with the soulful opener “Toki wo Kizamu Uta” being not only quite superior to the more ordinary closer “Torch” but possibly the best opening song of all of the Key/Visual Art's adaptations.

And that is where the series truly kicks into high gear: when it actually shows how things progress after the central couple finally, definitively, hooks up, revealing that “happily ever after,” if it comes, is not going to come right away. Tomoya's transition into the adult world is a sequence of events rarely played out in anime, as normally stories either run up to this point or start right after it. As such, those parts where he is struggling to get established and still manage his relationship with Nagisa have a more personal and real feel to them than any of the manufactured sentiment seen anywhere else in either series. Nagisa waking him up in the morning and cooking meals for him in his new apartment becomes more than just a tired anime cliché: they are her way of showing support for Tomoya's efforts and remaining close to him when they cannot be together as much anymore. During this time, everything that Tomoya has done to try to help others eventually leads him to important realizations about what really matters to him: a sense of family which fights off the loneliness, something which he never got at home. That leads to the long-anticipated (but amazingly low-key in execution) climax at the end of episode 12 – and kudos to Sentai Filmworks for wisely choosing to end this set on that note rather than also including episode 13 (of a possible 25). That is the moment which should be allowed to linger until the second half of the season becomes available.

Do a little thought experiment: You're an employee at an inn and a sixteen-year-old girl moves in. She's obviously lonely and uncertain, though she tries to hide it. She's kind of self-centered and not terribly sensitive, but her heart seems to be in the right place. Do you A) Give her some encouragement; B) Goof around a bit because mushy stuff makes you uncomfortable; C) Befriend her; or D) Tell her to go die because you've got your own sh** to deal with and she's obviously a f***ing spoiled brat. Oh, and if you're the boss, there's also option E: Put her to work and beat her when her kindness inconveniences the guests. The series is obviously trying to provide a quiet, realistic alternative to the bawdy, hyperactive, alien-and-ninja school of teen anime, and that's very nice of it, but harshness isn't realism, and cruelty doesn't make your characters complex; it just makes them bad people. Still, the show is beautifully animated and scored, as well as refreshingly sensitive and serious-minded. Plus, there's little doubt that future episodes will have Ohana ferreting out the reasons why the innfolk behave as they do, which will hopefully mitigate future unpleasantness.

The vast majority of “J Again” is devoted to kitchen and bedroom antics in the best anime tradition. Cherry teaches the former killing-machine Luchs the joys of cooking, Lime frolics around town twice as much as she does in the TV series, and various marionettes as well as Hanagata continue to try and bed Otaru. It may sound like a retread of other harem-household anime--and it is--but it does the routine better than most of its competition and even seems to capture some of the spirit of the original Tenchi Muyo! series, the mother of the genre. The interplay between the “refined” Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry and the crude and crass Tiger, Panther, and Luchs is great slapstick fun. It's also oddly endearing watching these formerly evil girls struggling to become model citizens, their former adversaries enthusiastically helping them on their way.

It can be hard finding a good romantic comedy anime. The male side tends to be dominated by the much (and for the most part rightly) maligned harem comedy, and the output on the female side, while often good, is low and pretty much never licensed stateside. While more widely distributed, the coldly calculated emotional manipulation of moe titles isn't for all tastes, and generally speaking their humor is pretty cursory (at best). Which is where Toradora! comes in. It is the champion of straightforward romantic comedy, a simple and sunny series that is both genuinely funny and genuinely touching and lacks for nothing in broad-based appeal.

Toradora! has probably the best sophomore episode of any romantic comedy. Not that anyone keeps track what with all those glory-hogging premiere episodes. Toradora!'s first is not among the glory hogs. It's as pleasant an affair as any in the series, just not terribly remarkable. There are laughs (Ryuji's wallet-finding prowess) and sweetness (the leads' immediate rapport) aplenty, but the series' real potential doesn't hit the fan, so to speak, until episode two. It has some fun with the expected misunderstandings (everyone thinks Taiga and Ryuji are an item) and mishaps (homemade cookie disaster ahoy!), but blows past them with very un-romantic-comedy speed. Of far more interest to it is the unexpected depth and richness of Ryuji and Taiga's fledgling friendship, which makes poignant silk from the cookie-snafu sow's ear and adds a whole range of bittersweet repercussions to the episode's denouement (a confession of love that comes shockingly early). Most romances can't boast final episodes like that, much less second episodes.

The series slows down almost immediately, though. Episodes three and four are leisurely character-building affairs (for Minori and Kitamura respectively), very much in the slice-of-life vein. They do little to advance the primary relationships, preferring to relax and allow time to absorb the new cast dynamic. But even when relaxing they drop at least one bombshell (about Kitamura and Taiga's mutual past) and never stop enriching Taiga and Ryuji's friendship. Heck, they even manage to humanize the inhumanly weird Minori. The episodes that follow are similarly low-tension affairs, devoted in this case to the hairy task of rounding out abrasive newcomer Ami Kawashima. Tellingly, she emerges on the other side one of the series' most complex and interesting characters. She also runs away with one of the disc's best scenes, a thrilling little affair during which she unleashes her inner beast on an unsuspecting stalker.

If all that talk of characterization makes these episodes sound kind of stodgy, they're not. Nuances and even big stinking revelations are allowed to surface at their own pace, driven more by the personalities of the cast than by the necessities of the plot. Though they move without hurry, they never bog down, maintaining an easy-moving grace that complements their even-keeled humor. Perhaps they aren't powerful, but they're never less than delightful.

That owes an awful lot to the cast, though. No matter how gracefully handled, characterization of sloppy or irritating characters is no fun to watch. Toradora!'s, on the other hand, are a constant joy to accompany, be it through the emotional highs of a confession or on a delivery run with a bicycle. A lot of that joy is simply in looking at them. With distinctively angled jaws, clear eyes and expressive mouths, Masayoshi Tanaka's designs have an elusive attractiveness that director Tatsuyuki Nagai exploits shamelessly, animating them with such care that they feel very real. There's almost as much enjoyment to be had from watching Taiga's mane of brown curls swirl about her (or watching her exude enough cuteness to make ugly cretins of puppies) as there is to be had from appreciating the mess of contradictions that form her personality.

Almost. The others are nearly as much fun to look at, particularly Ryuji, and Tanaka's ability to improve on the original designs (by Yasu) is suitably impressive, but the true wonder of Toradora!'s cast is in those personalities. Other series have comparably attractive—and expressive—designs (Hatsukoi Limited, also by J.C. Staff, comes to mind) but few can claim to have as iconic of characters. So powerful are the cast's personalities, in fact, that the series' venerable rom-com tropes end up having to accommodate them, bending around them the way rays of light bend around gravity wells. Classic love-letter mix-ups, romantic misunderstandings, confessions of love, meddling rivals, even the classic trip-and-fall; all have their usual paths redirected by the characters, whether it's Ami warping rival archetypes or Taiga brooking no misinterpretation of her friendship with Ryuji.

The storytelling itself is reminiscent of shoujo-horror creator Kaori Yuki. Victorian-era theatrics with blood-soaked alleyways, serial murderers, tormented pretty-boys and family lives that are anything but functional. Once Sebastian and Grell's fight is essentially completed, things detour to Ceil's Aunt An and her bleak back story. It proves considerably more engaging than one may assume it'd be going in, beginning in her years as an awkward teenager and eventually leading to her being molded by circumstance and psychosis into a medically licensed prostitute-killer. Her story is actually effectively heartbreaking to a point and surprisingly believable in its time-spanning evolution, save for perhaps the single-panel time skip of her medical degree acquisition.

Well, if it's about not rescuing distressed damsels from trolls, then it's about fending off demonic seductresses or battling for survival against 12-foot warriors. This volume of Berserk moves at a breathless pace from one blood-soaked set piece to the next, and at one point in the last couple of chapters, even lives up to the series' name. But constant peril and ever-escalating battle don't always spell good execution; Guts' escape from the cave seems a little too convenient to be true, and the next fight on his schedule gets a bit of a magical assist from an outside agent. The occasional forays into character introspection and personal development also seem arbitrary, placed there only to make the series feel deeper than it really is. But when you're busy having your mind blown by intense fantasy artwork and massive displays of power, do story flaws really matter all that much?

If anything, story flaws are probably the last thing from one's mind when this volume arrives in the middle of the troll rescue arc. The first few chapters are all about pure action and adventure: cutting one's way through nasty creatures, getting the captives out, and letting all the main characters grab their fair share of kills. (Yes, Isidro finally does something useful with that flaming knife of his.) Guts' encounter with a certain member of the demons known as the God Hand also ups the tension level—but the action and drama cuts itself off a little too soon when another character shows up to save the day. Playing the "Get Out of Cave Free" card does help to keep the arc from getting too long, but it's a clunky way to do it. Meanwhile, the occasional moments of internal monologue—Farnese reflecting on her emotional bond with Casca, Guts thinking to himself how much fun he's having—are simply too superficial to be of any real value.

Fortunately, this volume's second half is quick to jump back into pure action mode, with a riotous mob of Apostles serving as the next challenge. In this case, bringing up characters from previous story arcs is a good thing, since it keeps the series coherent and well-connected, plus Guts definitely needs an update on what Griffith and all his other old enemies are up to. Besides, who wouldn't want to see the world's greatest swordsman fight for his life against a 12-foot-tall armored giant? Taking on sentient warriors is always a lot more fun than chopping the heads off common beasts; it's clear that Guts' latest duel is a whole new level of challenge compared to the troll problem. Yet even this battle has to fall back on magical assistance—sure, it's nice to see advanced forms of ass-kicking and name-taking, but the hero of this series is supposed to have gained his reputation from sheer effort and skill, not because of performance-enhancing armor.

Speaking of sheer effort and skill, the artwork continues to impress on just about every page, whether it involves the shudder-inducing depths of Qliphoth or the explosive clashes of metal against metal as Guts duels against Grunbeld. Even if Kentaro Miura's personal style occasionally seems trapped in time (look at the way he draws child characters and compare against Kazuo Umezu), the level of detail and draftsmanship is the kind that stands out in any era. Miura's complete command of light and shadow gives every moment an otherworldly quality—this is one of the few series that can honestly claim to transport its readers to another time and place—and the attention to backgrounds is a welcome sight when so many other artists are too lazy to be bothered. But the real highlights, of course, are the action scenes, all of which benefit from dazzling layouts and intense pacing. Yet that same intensity and attention to detail can also be the artwork's own worst enemy; the action gets so overwhelming at times that it may take a quick re-read to understand who struck who during a pivotal moment.

As an action series, there isn't much to be expected from the dialogue—basically, the text does an adequate job of having the characters explain the situation, make battle decisions, and taunt their enemies. But there are also moments of eloquence, like when Schierke casts an elemental spell (even if it does end in an overused Nietzsche quote), or the chilling description of Guts' newfound armor. Being an action series also means frequent use of sound effects, and with the sounds so densely integrated into the artwork, leaving them alone in the original Japanese was clearly the best decision. Translations of each sound effect appear in the margins or white space, although they can become difficult to follow when the panels all bunch up next to each other. A pleasant bonus to this edition comes in the form of a color insert just behind the front cover.

Volume 26 of Berserk is hardly the best one in the series—it's not even especially memorable—but for fans who like a solid dose of action rendered in an eye-popping artistic style, this one should fit the bill. Between the trolls, the God Hand, and the Apostles, there's no shortage of villains for Guts and company to fight, and the variety of combat techniques keeps things interesting (even if Guts ultimately resorts to brute strength most of the time). Those keeping an eye on the plot will notice some minor annoyances, though: Guts' all-too-convenient escape from the troll cave, for one, and then the all-too-convenient armor that's been lying around waiting for him. Yes, Berserk throws in the occasional cheats and glitches in order to keep the fights competitive, and more importantly, awesome. But for a series like this, that's probably what matters most anyway.

If none of that made any sense—and really, there's no reason it should—don't worry, in Ikki Tousen plot is most definitely of secondary importance. The series' purpose isn't to tell a story. It's to show overripe high-school girls going at each other like kung-fu Playboy bunnies, preferably with the felicitous side-effect of stripping each other naked.

Based on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, an account of a particularly chaotic time in Chinese history, Dragon Destiny is, well, chaotic. The series is plotted to within an inch of its life, crammed with double-crosses, triple crosses, and other forms of devious skullduggery and political maneuvering. Its dialogue is a labyrinthine mess of references to events, people and places that would probably be familiar had one read The Three Kingdoms (or at least watched John Woo's Red Cliff) but that are gibberish to the uninitiated. Keeping the schools, their students, and their various allegiances straight is a chore only made more laborious by the barely-explained historical context and everyone's habit of stabbing one another in the back based on it. Stir in the nonsense about inner dragons and the baubles that can suppress them and you have a plot that is constantly on the ragged edge of incomprehensibility.

But really, why worry about niceties like who is who and why they do what they do when you can instead watch overdeveloped teenage girls beat each other until their breasts explode through their shirts, their panties separate from their rears, and their bladders give out and drench them in urine. Fun! As grotesque as the exercise sounds, the series is so ridiculously overpopulated with crotch-cams, copulation and sexed-up violence that it's more funny than shocking or even offensive. And unlike too many of its brethren, its Onan-friendly fan-service has a certain genuine artistic appeal. Vivid colors and compositions add visual punch to the panty-shredding fights, even as their slick presentation (a few artless digital pans and clunky explosions aside) and heartless, head-crushing violence add visceral impact. Eventually the constant battles achieve a sort of vulgar beauty, and even a (low) level of emotional engagement.

As you'd expect from a series obsessed with breasts, panties and everything else hormonal, Dragon Destiny is a highly visual series. Its gal warriors are drawn boldly and with an earthy sexuality that befits their violent natures and its attention to color and detail are clearly out of proportion with its quality. And even when its imagery isn't impressive, its energy is. The flip side to that is that it pays no attention to sound. After all, if it can't affect the groin, why waste effort on it? The usually reliable Yasuharu Takanashi's score is uncharacteristically bland, and Koichi Ohata's deployment of it is no more inspired. In a church? Use church music! In a fight? Use rock music! In the midst of sneaking? Use sneaky music!

The only real problem with “J Again” is that there's not much to it aside from the silly antics. The television series struck a good balance of comedy and adventure, but nothing really happens in this OVA series until the final two episodes, and even then the action is somewhat sparse. A lack of any strong villain puts “J Again” at a disadvantage. Without a Faust to fight or a Gartlant to infiltrate, Otaru and his crew seem to lose a lot of their edge. The final confrontation between the marionettes and the forces trying to terminate Marine is pretty pedestrian, and the last episode lacks the punch of the TV series' finale.

The actual course of events in this volume is very typical for Bleach: Ichigo fights, only rarely actually uses his brain, occasionally gets into squabbles with other characters, and tries to protect people without understanding that some of them take affront to having to be protected. Other characters occasionally contribute and/or cover Ichigo's butt when he overextends himself, powerful villains step forward to look down on the hero, K-ON! is annoying, and regular doses of comedy antics ensue. The understated comedy gem through this span is the simpatico pairing of the mod soul Noba with Chad, neither of whom speaks except when necessary; the scene in episode 69 where they just sit quietly in Chad's room until K-ON! interrupts is priceless. Oh, and Rukia also returns, sans zanpakuto. (Don't expect her to ever have one in this arc, either.)

As is (unfortunately) all too common in shonen series, Studio Pierrot's production of the animation and artistry suffers from occasional brief quality control lapses during these episodes, though it also continues its generally fine job of providing distinctive and memorable character designs. That does not necessarily mean that the designs are universally attractive, however; Kuroda's dual hair color is a positive fashion disaster, so he cannot turn into stuffed animal form fast enough. The series' odd sensibilities about using manga-style shading lines also continue, as do the flashy moves in the action scenes. All things considered, Bleach is not the best-looking of action series, but it fares acceptably well for what it is.

The series does much better on the music front, with various familiar stand-by themes mixing with some entirely new and creepy themes tailored specifically for the Bounts. The heavy third opener “Ichirin no Hana” continues through this run, as does the high-spirited sixth closer “My Pace,” here available in all its unedited-for-TV glory with the sharp original animation and visuals.

With a couple of exceptions, the English dub executes surprisingly close to the original in style and delivery. A character like Ichigo pretty much has to be voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch, Orihime pretty much has to be voiced by Stephanie Sheh, and Derek Stephen Prince is an excellent fit as Uryu. Amongst new roles, Troy Baker (Schneizel in Code Geass, Abel Nightroad in Trinity Blood) is a fine choice for the Bount Jin. One of the few distinct differences comes in the role of Captain Kurotuschi, where Terrence Stone's stylized performance makes him sound more blatantly crazy-evil. The English script does not vary much, either, beyond Americanizing some of the insults and more typically referring to characters by their first names; all of the attack and weapon names are fully retained, even including the German Doll names.

For Extras, this disk has a clean version of the new closer, a few production art pieces, and both anime and manga previews. In addition, after the Next Episode previews for each episode are the “Golden Illustrated Guide to Soul Reapers” comedy bits that were apparently part of the original Japanese broadcasts but never seen on the American TV broadcasts.

Bleach is not the kind of show one watches for a fulfilling experience. It has all of the depth of single-topping thin-crust pizza, what passes for character development mostly consists of fretting over not being powerful enough, and it suffers from most common foibles of long-running shonen action series. It does, however, fully recognize and play to its strengths by providing a (usually) entertaining mix of flashy action, silly comedy, and good old-fashioned angst. This volume isn't one of the series' strongest efforts but still provides enough for fans to muddle through and gives a strong base on which to build the upcoming long plot arc.

Where the storytelling and visuals fall short, the dialogue tries to compensate and almost gets away with it—some of the verbal exchanges, especially the more heated ones, are loaded with an energy that is missing from the overall story. Credit some of that to the translation, which isn't afraid to show off a bit of attitude in the way the characters talk (and thankfully without going overboard). Whether it's just a quip between friends or a declaration of outright hatred, the script is one of the few things in this volume that is at least somewhat entertaining. Translation is spottier on the sound effects, however, with much of it left in raw Japanese and only the occasional "thunk" or "smack" being added into the art at the discretion of the translator. For a series that uses sound effects fairly frequently, this kind of negligence is a big mistake.

Which is worse, then: a series that was mediocre to start with, or one that lapses into mediocrity after a promising start? The second volume of AiON may help to answer that question, as it sheds much of the complexity that made the first volume so interesting and goes for a pedestrian, slice-of-school-life approach that is saved only by lively conversation and occasional flashbacks. By the time the story starts to get back some of its suspense and supernatural vibe, this volume is already halfway over, and it doesn't help that supporting characters keep butting in with their time-wasting antics. What really feels terrible about all this is not slogging through the poorly crafted pages, but knowing that Yuna Kagesaki can do a lot better.

Peel back the layers of hype and counter-hype from the Naruto juggernaut and you'll find a series that is fun, often cool, and goes down like the addictive junk food it is. This set opens the series' darkest story arc—a culminating rivalry swimming in enough angst to drown a dozen teenagers—but never forgets that the series' heart lies not in emotional agonizing but in ninjas beating the snot out of each other.

Like any good shounen series, Naruto knows that an emotional foundation is essential in building good action set-pieces—its major story arcs have always excelled at combining affect and action—but this is far and away the most brooding story arc to date. Sasuke's decision to leave the Leaf Village is preceded by much agonizing over his powerlessness and lashing out at Naruto, Sakura's appeal to his better instincts is among the series' most blatant (and successful) emotional manipulations, and even Naruto—usually a bastion of optimistic energy—is allowed an unusually subtle display of emotion while sacrificing himself on the altar of his crush on Sakura. Every fight is intercut with the memories and motivations of its primary participants, and original author Masashi Kishimoto isn't above raising the emotional stakes of a fight to borderline silliness. Of course, how much you enjoy it all will depend heavily on your tolerance for twelve-year-olds acting like God's gift to badasses and your ability to suppress the desire to spank Sasuke like the whiny little brat he is.

Then the pursuit begins, fists and faces meet, and suddenly how sympathetic you are towards the characters matters a lot less. New combat techniques are broken out, characters power-up, and foul-mouthed baddies get the thrashings they richly deserve. In short, it's everything you expect from an action arc. The fight structure is repetitive to a fault—a series of competing power-ups followed by an elegiac coda—but follows a winning formula: the villains are vile, the heroes sympathetic, and the stakes high. Budget-saving flashbacks pad each episode and chop the ninja showdowns into jagged bursts of action, but Director Hayato Date puts the money saved into rock-em sock-em payoffs whose impact belies his television budget, making up for any lapses in fluidity with timing, well-placed CGI, and an instinctive eye for combat cool. Chouji, in addition to being a visual inspiration to every kid who ever wore their underwear on their head, proves a surprisingly capable action lead, as does Neji. As diverting as their fights are, however, it's seeing Shikamaru's growth into his role as leader that keeps the arc gliding smoothly to the simultaneous triple-showdown that is set to consume volume ten.

Effective as the interplay between Kishimoto's simple yet punk-cool character designs and Studio Pierrot's unusually smooth animation is, the series' most outstanding single trait is without doubt its soundtrack. Toshio Masuda is perhaps anime's most underrated composer, an artist whose brilliance lies in his very invisibility. Masuda melts into his series, equally capable of insanely catchy pop (Mahoromatic), delicate nostalgia (Ai Yori Aoshi), and soul-searing brilliance (Mushi-Shi). For Naruto he concocts a blend of power-chord guitars, eerie organs, and traditional drums, chants and flutes (often all at once) that is uncanny in its appropriateness to Kishimoto's mix of the fantastic, historic and blatantly anachronistic. Without Masuda's blazing main theme, no fight would ever reach the goosebump-raising heights that they occasionally do.

The length of time the folks a Viz have been working on this title really shows. By this point in the series the performances are nearly perfect. Everyone has gotten the hang of grunting, yelling and wigging out—all of which constitute a sizeable portion of this volume's dialogue. They shout out their moves with conviction, curse their enemies like they mean it, and slip into their characters like old gloves. The English script is a thing of beauty, a finely honed dance of fidelity and dialogue-facilitating re-writes. Those worried that the English cast will struggle under the weight of this installment's plentiful angst needn't continue adding to the wrinkles on their foreheads—the emoting is handled largely by the Naruto/Sasuke/Sakura trio, all of whom carry their scenes with ease. Even the heavy bits handed to supporting players like Choji and Neji work fine. The only let-down is a lack of a clean version of the new ending and the accompanying chance to appreciate Date's infallible eye for the various flavors of pop-punk.

Licensed by Royalty (changed from the original Japanese Engrish title, Licensed by Royal) is something of a conundrum. The elements are here for what could have been a smash hit series; there's spectacular animation, excellent music, a decent storyline and likeable characters. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, what we get is something of an undercooked mixed bag. The elements of this series that are successful just don't quite come together.

If you're going to sit through 6 to 12 hours of animation, chances are, you're going to want endearing and charming (or at least interesting) characters to watch. Licensed by Royalty succeeds in this arena, at least where the main characters are concerned. While they don't reach the sublime level of “cool” attained by Cowboy Bebop's titular hunter Spike, Jack and Rowe are just laid-back enough to be sympathetic and fun to watch. Their devil-may-care attitudes prevent them from becoming cold ‘hardcore’ warriors, a character archetype that's all too common in anime. Instead, Jack and Rowe quip their way through each episode, rolling with the punches. There's very little pretension about them; the dialogue between the two of them works very well. On the other hand, there aren't many other characters worth talking about. The “zany doctor” character is a cliché, and most of the other characters are wasted. Virtually none of them are developed whatsoever. Clearly the intent of the series is to go along on the ride with Jack and Rowe, and for a short series like this, that's totally acceptable.

It's more than all that, though. Several of the technical elements in this series make the pacing seem very awkward. There's something amiss about the editing, screenwriting and direction. For instance, in episode four, we start with maybe 10 seconds of Rowe and Jack in the desert, facing down a fence. Rowe has one line and then they cut to the chief briefing them on their mission. Normal screenwriting technique states that if you're going to start with the present and then have the episode's story told as a flashback that eventually catches up to the sequence at the top of the episode, you spend more than 10 seconds to establish why you chose this point in the story to begin the episode with. Something unique or exciting should happen. In this episode, however, the director chose a seemingly random spot later in the episode to show us first, almost as if he's aping what he's seen in other movies but doesn't understand how to use such a device in terms of film. There's a lot of awkwardness like this throughout the series, and it makes the proceedings somewhat uncomfortable.

The animation is mostly excellent. We get a few shots of digital cheapness and the same cut corners every other anime series on the market showcases, but the character animation is above par. The music is marvelous as well. The opening theme, sung by Billy Preston (who collaborated with The Beatles on the White Album), is catchy; it's probably one of the best anime theme songs from the past five years, mostly because it doesn't sound like an anime theme song. Most of the rest of the music is similar in tone. Almost all of the songs used in each episode have lyrics, and it's a very refreshing change from the generic synth incidentals we get in other series.

The dub showcases New Generation Pictures in fine form, yet again. While the series' characters are not technically British, the show is so obviously based in and around England that using American voices would have ruined the feel of the series. New Generation elected to find a completely British cast for this show and the results are astounding and refreshing. Jack and Rowe have that perfect British edge to them; they're soft spoken, understated and come across as effortlessly cool, much more so than in the Japanese. Noelle, a young girl featured in the third episode, is performed with panache, completely avoiding the ‘generic anime girl’ voice problem prevalent in so many other shows. Cloud7's chief is performed by a veteran voice actor who is an absolute joy to hear in anything, and he does another amazing job here. Most of the cast seem to pass their lines off with ease; the result is a fantastic dub, nearly on par with New Generation's other bar-raising work, Hellsing. There are, obviously, a few misreadings and a couple of stumbles, mostly on the part of background characters, but such things are forgivable and ever-present in today's anime dubs. Given that the Japanese sound mix on this series not only drowns out the dialogue with bafflingly loud music but also loses the atmosphere the director was going for thanks to the Japanese voices, there's no reason not to revel in New Generation's nigh-perfect dub. Don't miss it.

The second volume of this ongoing shoujo series revolves around three main episodic conflicts and the heroine Yura's accompanying reactions and attempts to cope. The first of these conflicts began in the volume one: Another jealous cast member has ruined the Noodle Girl Natsuki's costume right before she is scheduled to begin shooting. Yura, though, demonstrates an admirable level of insight into her character and on the spot resourcefulness that leads to an impressive moment of triumph. This sort of on the job success seems reminiscent of Skip Beat! by Yoshiki Nakamura, and its influence—not to mention a “Me too!” sort of slavish attitude toward commercially successful manga creation that is endemic in Japan—shows here brazenly. But since it's subplots like these that make Skip Beat! great, Honey Hunt has also managed to put its best foot forward.

The second of the three main conflicts in volume two involves one of a more personal nature—Yura's relationship with her manager Keiichi Mizorogi. Although Yura was determined to become a professional actress all by herself, without the assistance of her parents' celebrity, as it turns out, Mizorogi was actually using her parentage to market her. Without her knowledge, of course. But during a press conference for the Noodle Girl show, she is unexpectedly outed as the only daughter of Takayuki Onozuka and Yukari Shiraki. Her faith in Mizorogi betrayed, she decides to flee the agency…and, with the help of Q-ta, who had missed the press conference due to a gig abroad, lands on the literal doorstep of Haruka.

Ruining the garden, blowing up the conservatory and destroying the living room - these characters seem poised to act as nothing but contrasts to Sebastian's unequal skills. Why? Presumably to ensure there's some life in the mansion aside from Ceil and his butler, though the resulting enthusiasm they exude leaves more a desire to see the devilishly well-dressed servant strangle it from them instead. For many discerning anime viewers, the mere mention of "based on a dating sim" is enough to send them scurrying away (or lull them to sleep, if it's anything by Kyoto Animation). But what to make of series that is about dating sims without actually being based on one? And more than that, a series that openly pokes fun at the strange, artificial conventions of these games? This is the unusual territory occupied by The World God Only Knows, which lampoons the logic of the dating-sim genre (not to mention the obsessive-compulsive nature of its fans) while still crafting thoughtful tales of adolescent drama. The first episode alone is a harbinger of the show's potential, laying down the premise and telling a self-contained story. Keima's first conquest involves wooing the school's track star, and the episode gets the easy stuff out of the way first with comedy antics illustrating just how ridiculous it is to apply gaming logic to real-life situations. After that, however, the story starts to stretch its boundaries: the final act, full of personal soul-searching and surprising acts of chivalry, is as heartfelt as any standard romance-game anime adaptation, if not better. And that's just Episode 1! This rich blend of comedy and drama also fuels the series' longer storylines, with the crowning achievement being Episodes 5-7. In this middle arc, Keima's pop-idol classmate Kanon is the target, and the story becomes so much more than just boy-meets-girl: it is an exploration of personal dreams and goals, a scrutinization of the pressures of the entertainment industry, and an affirmation of the bonds of friendship. If anything, it's all the stuff beyond simple girl-chasing that makes the storytelling great.

Even the side-story episodes are ambitious in their own way, like the mind-bending "Coupling with with with with," which presents the events of a single day from four different points of view and leaves the plot for the viewer to figure out. Granted, it's no Kurosawa masterpiece—episodes like this are mostly just lightweight distractions from Keima's principal quest. Overall, though, there are no bad episodes—maybe just flawed ones, like the early part of book-lover Shiori's arc, which takes too long to develop (although it does redeem itself with an incredible climactic sequence). If there is one aesthetic that guides the series through its many moods, it's an overriding flair for the dramatic; even the throwaway finale where Keima catches up on his gaming backlog is presented as some kind of Olympian feat.

Part of what makes this dramatic flair possible is the animation, which does not cut corners like so many dating-sim adaptations do, but shows expressiveness and fluidity no matter what the situation. Whether it's something as ridiculous as Keima extolling the virtues of 2-D girls, or something as riveting as Kanon taking the stage before a sold-out stadium, every scene is framed for maximum visual impact—even if that means having to draw things the hard way (hundreds of lightsticks for the concert scene) or managing all the in-between frames for rapid-fire comedy outtakes. A varied color palette also makes each of the different storylines stand out, from the afternoon-to-sunset-to-evening shift in the first episode to the muted tones of Shiori's library in the final arc. And while some may call out the character designs for their stereotypical looks, it's actually part of the series' satirical nature, with Keima pointing out the "traditional" features that are expected of dating-sim heroines. As they say, the better you know the source material, the more effective the parody.

Still, visuals are only one half of the equation when it comes to dramatic flair, and the soundtrack fills in where imagery alone cannot say what needs to be said. It would have been enough for soaring strings and sweeping melodies to accentuate Keima's conquests in the early episodes, but the series also proves its worth with insert songs. In particular, Kanon's repertoire in her story arc is more than just rhyming lines designed to take up running time, but is as legitimate as any mainstream J-pop release—if not better. The true musical masterpiece awaits in the penultimate episode, though, where the full-length version of the opening theme plays during a pivotal scene. In its uncut form, the theme song is more operatic rhapsody than pop confection, and really encapsulates how this series can defy expectations and put on a grander show than anyone may have expected from "some guy meeting a lot of cute girls."

The bad news about something like The World God Only Knows is that, now that we have a self-referential spoof on dating sims and harem storylines, it can never be done again—anyone else who tries to poke fun at the artifice of romance games versus reality is just going to look unoriginal. The good news, however, is that a second season is slated for Spring 2011, promising even more of Keima's comical yet heartwarming escapades (not to mention further coverage of the main storyline contained in the original manga). By most expectations, anything involving ditzy demon girls and gaming-obsessed geekboys and a rotating lineup of high school beauties should have been the stuff of critical derision. Yet the show's sharp sense of humor, honest emotions, and polished production values prove that working with familiar clichés doesn't have to result in a clichéd product. With the right prodding and poking, any anime series can indeed become greater than the sum of its parts.

The pacing and organization of the story, as presented here in manga form, focuses entirely on setting up and executing dramatic scenes, whether it be battle footage, killings, or one of the Seven Spears working out who Princess Sen actually is. Mercifully it stays light on training footage, instead preferring to concentrate more on what the Hori women do with their training and the kinds of special attacks that the Aizu Seven Spears use. The attacks may not be as outlandish as the super-powered ninjutsu seen in Ninja Scroll or Basilisk but they have a similar style and feel.

The artistry also shares stylistic similarities with both. Huge chins, caricatured features, and prominent eyebrows are the norm for the character designs, which seem intent on making the Seven Spears look as ugly and monstrous as they act; even the one with a more effeminate bishonen look still has the taint of violence and evil in his rendering. Princess Sen also has a certain harsh look which seems intended to suggest that, for all her kindness, she is a woman not to be messed with. Plentiful shading and nice use of detail gives the artistry a practiced, well-refined look and avoids the empty feel so common in manga panel art that doesn't used backgrounds. The content does not short the viewer on the promise of intense graphic violence, either, as heads roll (literally), people get brutally stabbed, and so forth. Most of the sexuality and nudity is more implied than outright shown, but between the bits that are shown, the graphic violence content, and the occasional expletive, the “Mature Content” warning and M rating are well-deserved. And a related bonus historical note: yes, people really did make the penis-shaped monuments seen in volume 2 and display them prominently, so that isn't just an affectation for this series.

Now an eighteen-year-old unemployed lump with an obsessive love for jellyfish, Tsukimi has no illusions about her princesshood. But even if she isn't a princess, Tsukimi enjoys her life. She lives at Amamizu-kan, an apartment complex occupied solely by hardcore female otaku, and whiles away her days drawing jellyfish and hanging (indoors of course) with her "Sisterhood" of social cripples. If she gets blue, she just has to visit the pet store down the street and commune with their jellyfish display. The heat that gets the crackpot stew boiling is a vixen-run redevelopment project, aimed primarily, in the minds of the Sisterhood, at leaving them homeless. Which gives them no choice but to break out of their self-imposed isolation to lodge protest, and raise money to buy their digs out from under their Korean-idol-loving landlady. But what moves the plot forward is hardly the point. The point is the unexpected yet weirdly logical complications that arise along the way, when the ingredients of the crackpot stew start blending together and bouncing off each other. Kuranosuke's horror at finding he is attracted to Tsukimi is a highlight ("You can't gaze dreamily into the night sky with your eyes all sparkly and say it looks like we're underwater! That's cheating dammit!"), and Tsukimi's instant attraction to his asshole brother Shu is a hilarious horror.

The fate of vixen Shouko Inari is a weirdly sweet reversal capable of competing for raw "take that!" satisfaction with any of the gorier, crueler reversals director Takahiro Omori orchestrated in Baccano!. Between the larger complications the supporting players provide a pretty consistent backdrop of amusing antics, the best of which feature Kuranosuke's eminently bribable chauffer and his abacus-school buddy the incompetent gumshoe. Given half a chance the pair would completely run off with the series. The cumulative effect is charming: a romantic comedy that truly trusts its cast, as opposed to plot contrivances and manufactured crises, to hold its audience.

Though Leina survives her fall from the cliff into the river, she soon washes up in the domain of Menace, a former Queen of the long-lost kingdom of Amara who has been resurrected by the Swamp Witch and now seeks to reestablish her former kingdom, with the spiritually enslaved Leina as one of her first servants. After an encounter there with Tomoe and the angel Nanael results in another big fall, Leina next washes up in the Elven Forest, where she encounters the panty-less half-elf Nowa and the more dignified elf Combat Master Alleyne and also does battle with Airi, a scythe-wielding maid who, along with Menace and Melona, is another servant of the Swamp Witch. Meanwhile, the bumbling Nanael gets called back to Heaven over her ineptness in managing the Queen's Blade matches and is given one more chance to redeem herself else she be sent to Hades or, nearly as bad, exiled to Earth. Tomoe and Shizuka also have their share of additional problems as they encounter difficult terrain and run afoul of Elina (who is out searching for Leina with her entourage) and a skilled female assassin under the guise of Elina's page.

The primary emphasis is, of course, on the fan service. The camera never hesitates to show an angle on the angel Nanael which flashes her panties as she's flying along; that the other angels do not do that is another visual indicator of how much of a screw-up she is. That is the mildest form that the series' fan service takes, however, as the norm is putting its female characters in positions where clothes get knocked off or revealingly torn up in fights or the characters otherwise have reason to be partly or totally naked, such as bathing scenes, having medicinal leaves applied to a chest wound, being tied up shibari-style, forced to strip by an enemy, and so forth. One unsophisticated character goes commando (which is almost a plot point), we learn that elven women typically use leaves in place of panties, one character wears a maid outfit for no good reason, Ms. Snake-For-A-G-String and Ms. I-Have-Hands-Cupping-My-Breasts are back (the former in cameos, the latter in more regular appearances), and there are even a couple of scenes of girl-on-girl lip-locking. Naturally, the only male character with a significant role is a very randy animated staff – and yes, the inherent joke that represents is almost certainly intentional. The opening and closing visuals are also loaded with nudity.

The plot at this point primarily emphasizes introducing new characters and establishing their particulars, although it does drop hints about two bigger threads: that the reigning Queen may be up to something and that a new archvillainness, the Swamp Witch, wants to disrupt the Queen's Blade competition for some reason. It also allows Leina to start to show a little more durability and strength, though the story still keeps dropping her (sometimes literally!) into abusive situations and moving her around with improbable alacrity so that she can interact with all of the new characters, while Claudette gets a further opportunity to explore her own motives. Introductions include the villainous maid Airi, the somewhat tragic Nowa, the dignified Alleyne, the assassin Irma, and an angelic friend of Nanael's who does not really count since she is not one of the featured babes. These episodes also delve into the backgrounds of some of its characters, with Nowa in particular shown as struggling through sad conditions and Nanael coming off as a little more sympathetic – though she is still undeniably the series' resident klutz.

The key draw of the series is, of course, the mix of petite and buxom babes, and the artistry continues to shine in that department. Menace provides the alluring, full-figured Egyptian look, while Airi and Nowa offer slighter builds as options and Irma and Alleyne stand somewhere in between. All are sexy and attractive in their own ways, as is the recurring cast from the first volume. These uncensored episodes show fully detailed nudity and an impressive variety of creative costuming, but the latter is to be expected since the character designs in the source material came from a wide variety of popular artists, including My-HiME character designer Hirokazu Hisayuki, who designed all three of the Vance sisters. The colors used come out very vibrantly and backgrounds offer a suitable variety of exotic fantasy locales, including a convincing rendition of Heaven. Fight choreography is not up to the same standard and is, in fact, the weakest element that the series actually makes an effort at; the only battle which even comes close to carrying the same punch and flash as those in the first volume is Nanael's battle against the minions of the Swamp Witch, where she shows that, whatever other aspects she may be lacking in, combat ability is not one of them. Overall, though, the animation is not a major weak point in the regular episode content.

That's a lot of information to be dumped in a short time, and there's no denying the drag it has on the series' forward momentum. Rather than charging, the series kind of lurches forward, stopping between fights with God Eneru's lieutenants and encounters with giant man-eating fauna to explain this or that point. The relatively minor Satori battle is so heavily inter-cut with Nami's explorations and the natives' battle preparations, among other things, that it stretches out over four whole episodes. Which, given how please-god-make-him-stop annoying Satori is, is four episodes too long. Speeches, flashbacks, and cuts to Eneru doing his megalomaniac thing have a similarly disruptive effect on later episodes.
